They said our dream was impossible...

People said our dream was impossible. Bring the best musicians in the world to one place and play for them and with them via a computer or smartphone. That’s right. I said it. Play with them...in real time - or darn close to it. Musicians have been begging for this technology - and we heard them. All we had to do was reduce latency to less than 25 milliseconds between two musicians up to 600 miles apart. That’s the same lag, or delay, that you’d get if the two musicians were in the same room, but sitting 25 feet away from each other. Playing together while sitting 25 feet apart is completely doable. So, why not online? The trick was getting the latency down to below 25 milliseconds. For years, everyone told us it was impossible.

But that was just part of our dream. First, we had to create an online space where the best musicians in the world would gather. We knew we had to have profile pages that would serve as personal websites - with the musicians’ bios, contact info (if they opted to list it), musical interests, photo or avatar, etc. We also knew we would need a video repository, but with higher video quality, faster upload speeds, unique tools for sharing portfolios, and without all the silly home video stuff you would find elsewhere. We didn’t need another place in which to post popular celebrity videos. Just videos of our musicians.

I say our musicians with great pride. The members of Musical Overture are like a gigantic family. Musical Overture is not just a web application, it is a community of musicians who want to meet each other and play for and with each other. After all, we musicians feel most like musicians when we are interacting with other musicians and with the people who love to listen to our music. As a result, Musical Overture has become the world’s first truly global directory of musicians. Instead of referring to the musicians’ union directory, orchestra personnel directors can find musicians and audition players on Musical Overture. Musicians realized that if they wanted to be found, they needed to have a presence on Musical Overture.

Once musicians found each other and played for each other using the HD video repository, the next step was to play together. Thus, the Gig Room was born. Finally, musicians could find each other, play for each other and play with each other in real time. If a singer needs to rehearse with a pianist, the Gig Room makes that possible. If a bandmate is unable to attend a rehearsal, the Gig Room allows that player to attend and contribute to the rehearsal in real time. The Gig Room is also the perfect way to teach “distance lessons.” All you need is a computer or smartphone with a fast and reliable internet connection.

The Gig Room will forever change the way we make music together. It removes geographical barriers and opens a pathway to music making for the entire world. Musical Overture members have been recruited by top universities and conservatories, record labels and television networks. Hear Us, the film about three musicians who met on Musical Overture, was broadcast on over 300 public television stations and won the 2019 World Silver Medal at the New York Television and Film Awards. Those three musicians have become known all over the world. (Btw, you can view Hear Us on MusicalOverture.com now!)

There are many advantages to being a part of the world’s first truly global community of musicians. Musicians can meet their peers and find comradery through their common love of music making. Students can meet prospective teachers and mentors who can guide them on their lifelong musical journey. That road runs both ways, of course. Teachers, universities, conservatories, agents and personnel managers can recruit talented up and coming musicians, too. Music retailers can finally interact with musicians without having to go through the traditional gatekeepers (band directors, chorus teachers, etc). This road runs both ways, too. Musicians can interact with their favorite manufacturers, which will deepen brand awareness and loyalty. Music lovers benefit, too, as they are able to meet their musical idols and even play with them. This, again, works both ways. Musicians can interact with their fans on an even deeper level than is possible on other network platforms.

The message is simple. Meet the best musicians in the world and play for them and with them - in real time. People said it couldn’t be done. We didn’t listen to them. We were too busy listening to you.

What was thought to be impossible is now possible

What impossible dreams will you achieve?

The world is looking for you. Let’s show them where to look.

’d like to take a moment to write about what Musical Overture is. I get asked about this “website” quite often. How many people are on the “website”? How many countries are represented on the “website”? How many instruments are played on the “website”? These are fair questions - although, www.MusicalOverture.com is actually a very sophisticated web application with a variety of powerful tools designed for musicians, not merely a “website”. But aside from web url, Musical Overture is really...You. Musical Overture is a community that gathers at www.MusicalOverture.com. The “website” is the concert venue and rehearsal space where we meet and exchange music, ideas, and much more. .

The idea was born out of the fact that musicians feel most like musicians when 1) sharing our music with people who love to listen to music, and 2) when we are interacting with other musicians. As we - the community of musicians that is Musical Overture - grow in number, so too will the importance of this community grow in our lives. When a member is looking for a pianist, the more members of Musical Overture who play the piano the better. When a member is looking for a bass player with whom to jam, the more bassists the better. When a member is hoping to be found by other musicians, agents, conductors and producers, the more people actively looking for musicians the better.

In other words, Musical Overture is also the world’s first and largest global directory of musicians. The more this community grows, the more useful it is to us, the community of musicians that is Musical Overture. So let’s tell the world and share this with every musician we know.

I believe that the world needs us - the musicians who put to sound the feelings and emotions of all of humanity. The world is looking for us. Let’s show them where to look!

Nearly 200,000 musicians in the United States (music teachers, performers and composers) are out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s how you can help them.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 187,000 professional musicians in the United States. Imagine how many there are around the world. Most of these musicians have been ordered to shelter in place and have lost their ability to earn a living. Even so, many are finding ways to make this terrible situation more bearable for the rest of us by giving us beautiful and meaningful music through online concerts, recitals and online instruction.

Online performances and streaming from their living rooms won’t pay the bills, though. But you can help.

MusicalOverture.com is providing any musician a free space in which to create a personal page, upload videos, chat with fans and - perhaps most importantly - receive tips from the people who love their music. Venmo, PayPal, Amazon Smile, Patreon and CashApp are all supported and 100% of the funds go directly into the musicians’ digital wallet - Musical Overture doesn’t keep a penny of it.

If music is important to you, then the people who make the music are important, too. Performers, composers and music teachers need our financial support. Let them know about this opportunity on MusicalOverture.com and let’s show them our support and gratitude for making our lives more beautiful today and everyday.

Why Musical Overture?

When I was in grade school, I was the only kid I knew who practiced music for hours each day. I loved music and wished I could find someone who shared the same passion and discipline to practice. I would have given anything to have met other people like me. I knew they were out there, just not in my small town.

Musicians practice up to eight or ten hours a day in order to get to the level needed to perform in front of audiences. Access to resources like mentors, fellow musicians, and education depends on the musician’s location, and in some cases, may be miles away. In music, as in many areas, there is definitely such a thing as geographic advantage.

When I was a graduate teaching assistant, I taught computer science majors how to write music for video games. This experience helped me build on my knowledge of code, and I wanted to use technology to close the distance between emerging musicians. So, I helped create Musical Overture, a networking platform for musicians that allows members to make music for and with each other. Think LinkedIn + YouTube + Zoom, but designed especially for musicians. Since MO is a community of musicians from all over the world, MO also serves as a global directory where musicians can be found and where people looking for musicians can find exactly the right performer or composer they are looking for.

As a member of Musical Overture, you can build your own HD video collection. Each video can be tagged as Portfolio, Performance, Practice, or “just for fun”. You’ll soon be able to group videos together in sharable portfolios so you can easily share only the videos you select for a given portfolio. If there is a set of videos that you want to send to an agent, send only those videos. If there is a set of videos you want to send to a university or conservatory, send only those videos.

You can also let your followers support you by giving you tips in your tip jar. 100% of these funds bypass Musical Overture and go directly to your digital wallet such as Venmo or Paypal.

One of the most exciting features you will see added soon is The Gig Room, a WebRTC based video conferencing tool that will allow you to play with other musicians with less than 25 millisecond delays. This tool will revolutionize the way we rehearse, teach lessons, and even the way we perform.

And just so you know, at Musical Overture we take privacy very seriously. Since releasing the beta site several years ago, we’ve been controlling the growth and culture of the community by staying on top of monitoring and removing any would-be predators off the site. We’ve been very careful about protecting the young people on the platform so that their parents feel good about them participating in Musical Overture.

This is a fantastic tool for musicians, but it is also a great place to have fun sharing your music and listening and participating with other people. Musicians meet each other, then play for and with each other. They share a sense of belonging around their passion for making music.

An Overture is what happens first. The Overture whets our appetites for what is about to come.

So join us at Musical Overture, and see what happens next.
